Leonard Street. Grand Rapids to Grand Haven - This is my favorite "trail," I take Leonard street in Grand Rapids all the way to Spring Lake, over the drawbridge to Grand Haven. 35-40 miles one way depending on where I start. It is busy around 3 -5 pm going west. Everyone wants to go west toward the lake at that time and the road's width isn't really bike friendly. It is best to take it in the morning or before noon but not impossible. Wear bright clothes! The YMCA is near the Coast Guard Station in Grand Haven to get a shower... when you're there also visit The Kirby Grill. Yumm. There are NO Stores, gas stations, bathrooms, etc. once you get west of Wilson Avenue. Be careful heading west. Leonard street has a lot of rolling hills until you get near Spring Lake where it levels off. Here are some photos from a few of my rides. My son Joe went with me on these last two. End of the line in Grand Haven State Park
Moo. Lamont Michigan. Looking S.E. The Grand River is in the background.
Lamont, looking South. The Grand River is in the middle of this image.
Not bike friendly in width in many places. Be careful if you head towards Grand Rapids in the morning or west in the afternoon.
My son Joe got ahead of me for a few minutes...
Landscape, looking south.
A few turns but nothing hard to figure out. Just don't turn towards the expressway and you'll make it. This was taken near Crockery Creek and 112th ave.
I think this is called Crockery Creek. Near 112th.
taken Aug. 14, 2005 This is the bridge over the Spring Lake channel, looking east. No motor vehicles allowed. There's Joe ahead of me again...
Same location, just looking west now. The drawbridge is blue behind the tower.
Sometimes I cut over to Richmond Street to and from my house, less trafic than Leonard. This is on Richmond street near the top of the big hill near Richmond Park. What does this sign really mean?
Hah, I beat Joe by a couple minutes. 38 miles this time. Time? To long, over three hours, we stopped at Taco Bell though. He's got to stop wearing camo colored clothes for rides...
-Hey Kloska, see you on the road some time okay? |
